50th Anniversary: Surfing Comp for Pa & Ma

Easter long weekend says to us: family time, good food, relaxation and soaking up the sun. At the Pa & Ma Bendall surfing competition, happening at Moffat Beach, you can do just that! And you can add in the action of the huge annual surfing contest right here in Caloundra.

The event is across three BIG (we might be manifesting the swell here!) days over the Easter the long weekend from Friday 29th to Sunday 31st March 2024.

This year marks the 50th anniversary of the competition, making it an extra special event filled with nostalgia and a celebration our surfing culture that has thrived in our community for what seems forever.

You might ask who are Pa & Ma Bendall? The Bendall’s were remarkable surfing icons who lived and surfed here in Caloundra while travelling up and down the east coast of Australia on surfing safari in their well-equipped Commer van during the 1960 and 1970s period. Their influence on beach culture throughout Australia and the surfing industry during the formative years of surfboard riding was significant. The fact that they were older when surfing was so young and how they embraced the culture is well documented in the records of Australian surfing history. You can read more about the history and influence of the Bendall’s here. Even better, grab some popcorn and watch the Broadoak production ‘Pa & Ma Bendall Making Waves’ to really have an appreciation for their legacy.

Some incredible special guests are lined up for the 50th anniversary occasion. Joining us will be Richard Harvey, the original winner of the Pa & Ma competition back in 1974. Wayne Rabbit Bartholomew, an Australian world champion surfer, and Rusty Miller, one of the original WindanSea California members, will be gracing us with their presence.

A star-studded lineup of past competition winners and respected surfers will be joining in on the action, and, we hear former world number 2 Serena Brooke is in town.

Heats for the Open Men’s division kick off bright and early at 7am on Friday morning, with 48 heats to determine the ultimate champion. Other divisions consist of Women’s, cadets, and seniors, ensuring there’s something for everyone.

For three full days, we’ll be treated to thrilling surf heats that will keep us on the edge of our beach towels with the excitement building for the finals on Sunday.

Stick around after the Open Men’s Final, expected to be around 1pm on Sunday, for the presentation where the winners will receive their well-deserved recognition.
